1973 saw a number of records set but not by Newport. Newport eased past Penarth in the first round but then lost 12-16 to Bridgend in the next round. Bridgend lost to Newbridge in the S/F while Llanelli beat Swansea in the other S/F but only having beaten Cardiff in the second round 22-18 after extra time. In the final Llanelli crushed Newbridge 52-6 to record the biggest score in a Snelling sevens match and their 118pts was also a record. Phil Bennett beat the previous best individual points record of 36 held by Barry John with 38 pts. Roy Bergiers won the Everson Award.
