Select a Season

1985

In 1985 Newport fielded David Waters, Mike Watkins (capt) and Roger Powell at forward and Steve Pill, Paul Daniel, Paul Turner and Tony Coombes in the backs. Glen George, Ceri Jonathan and Phil Steele were also in the squad. The tournament once again reverted to a knock-out rather than Pools.

A close win 20-18 against Llanelli saw them meet Maesteg in the 2nd Rd and they duly won 22-12. A close fought S/F against Swansea saw them edge home 13-10 to meet Glamorgan Wanderers in the final. The final was one of the most one-sided ever seen in the Snelling Sevens and Newport romped home 43-0 for their first Tournament win since 1967. In fact Newport never again won the trophy and were only to appear in one more final up to 1995.

The Bill Everson Award was won by Newport winger Steve Pill who scored 8 tries in the tournament.
